General Affidavit

An affidavit is a statement of witnesses or experts who took the oath or affirmation in the presence of a sworn person. For example, a notary is a sworn person. “Sworn” refers to the completeness, truthfulness, and thus reliability of a statement. The affidavit can be used in court, in a case related to a claim, but is arguable and thus less definitive than written evidence.

How can a General Affidavit be used?

An Affidavit isn't just used in a court setting. A General Affidavit can be used on different occasions, even when you're entering sweepstakes. But why exactly is it needed there?

You could assume that when your name is drawn, you have won the contest. Usually, though, you'll need to go through a few more hoops before you can claim your prize. Many sweepstakes require a signed and notarized affidavit before a sweepstakes winner is confirmed. Until the affidavit is received and verified, you are only a potential winner.

An affidavit verifies that:

• The information you entered on the sweepstakes entry form is true and accurate.
• You are registered according to the rules.
  
• You are eligible to win the prize and are not affiliated with the sweepstakes sponsor.
• You agree to the terms and limitations of claiming the prize if any.
  

In most cases, the affidavit will ask you to confirm that the information you submitted on your application form is accurate, and to swear that you agree to the sweepstakes rules. You may be asked to confirm that the sponsors can publish your name as the sweepstakes winner for advertising purposes and that you are not working for the sponsor or the judging agency.
