How to Use the Pythagorean Theorem

where c is the length of the hypotenuse, and a and b are the lengths of the other two sides of the triangle.

For example, if you know that the length of one leg of a right triangle (a) is 5 feet and the length of the other leg (b) is 12 feet, you can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse (c):

c2 = 52 + 122

c2 = 25 + 144

c2 = 169

c = √169

c = 13 feet
