Many of us are familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem, which is used to find the length of the sides of a right triangle. It's a fundamental concept in geometry and is applicable in various fields such as architecture, engineering, and physics. Let's take a closer look at what the Pythagorean Theorem is and how it works.

What is the Pythagorean Theorem?

The Pythagorean Theorem is a formula used to calculate the length of the sides of a right triangle. A right triangle is a triangle with one right angle (90 degrees). The theorem states that:

c2 = a2 + b2

Where c is the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) and a and b are the lengths of the other two sides.

How Does the Pythagorean Theorem Work?

The Pythagorean Theorem is based on the relationship between the sides of a right triangle. The square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. We can use this relationship to find the length of any one of the sides if we know the lengths of the other two.

Let's look at an example:

Suppose we have a right triangle with sides of length a = 3 and b = 4. We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse c:

c2 = a2 + b2

c2 = 32 + 42

c2 = 9 + 16

c2 = 25

c = √25

c = 5

Therefore, the length of the hypotenuse c is 5.
