Marketing is not just about promoting a product or service. It is an entire process that involves identifying consumer needs, developing products and services that meet those needs, setting prices that are competitive, creating awareness through promotion, and ensuring availability through distribution. However, traditional marketing models may no longer be effective in the current business landscape.

What is Functional Marketing?

Functional Marketing is a modern marketing model that is adapted to the current business environment. It is focused on creating value for both the customer and the company by aligning a company's capabilities with customer needs. Functional Marketing is a customer-centric approach that focuses on the function of the product or service rather than the product itself.

How Does Functional Marketing Work?

Functional Marketing is based on the concept of the Product Life Cycle (PLC). The PLC describes the stages a product goes through from introduction to decline. The four stages of the PLC are:

  • Introduction: the product is introduced to the market and awareness is generated.
  • Growth: sales increase, and the product becomes profitable.
  • Maturity: sales peak, and competition increases.
  • Decline: sales decrease, and the product is eventually phased out or replaced.

Functional Marketing focuses on identifying the stage of the PLC that a product is in and adapting the marketing strategy accordingly. For example, in the Introduction stage, the focus would be on creating awareness and generating interest. In the Maturity stage, the focus would be on differentiation and positioning to maintain market share in the face of increased competition.

Why Embrace Functional Marketing?

Functional Marketing provides several advantages over traditional marketing models:

  • Better Alignment: Functional Marketing ensures that a company's capabilities are aligned with customer needs, leading to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Adaptability: Functional Marketing is adaptable to changing market conditions, allowing companies to respond quickly to shifts in customer needs and preferences.
  • Increased Efficiency: Functional Marketing streamlines the marketing process, reducing costs and increasing ROI.
