Download Bizzlibrary's free Profit and Loss template (P&L template) to create your financial statement. After downloading the Excel file have a look at the examples and the Excel formula (INDIRECT) used to create the yearly overview. Enter your business information into the blanks to create your P&L overview. The downloadable Excel file includes 2 templates and 3 examples. A Statement of Profit and Loss (also called an Income Statement) summarizes the business's income and expenses for a period of time to arrive at its net earnings for the period. The file is print-ready and uses frozen panes to keep the monthly overview. It also includes custom Excel number formatting to ensure negative numbers are shown in red and are surrounded by brackets (financial format). Depending on your region you might need to change the thousands and decimal formatting.

How to show negative numbers in brackets in Microsoft Excel in financial overviews?

Select the cells you want format.
Press Ctrl+1 or right click and choose Format Cells… to open the Format Cells dialog.
Go to the Number tab.
Select Custom in the Category list.
Type in #.##0,0_ ;[Red](#.##0,0) to display. The number when negative, will show in red and including brackets.
Click OK to apply formatting.

Excel tip: Thousands and decimal separators can vary based on your local settings. For example; while dot (.) usually is a thousand separator in North America, comma (,) is a decimal separator in Europe.
