FTE is calculated by dividing an employee's scheduled hours by the employer's scheduled hours for a full-time workweek. 1.0 FTE is the number of employees who are expected to work 40 hours per week for an employer with a 40-hour workweek. A full-time employee who works 20 hours per week is 0.5 FTE.

How do you calculate the equivalent of a full-time employee?

The following formula can be used to calculate the full-time equivalent:
  1. The first step is to determine how many hours part-time employees work.
  2. The next step is to determine how many hours full-time employees have worked during a given period. Employees who work full-time work a minimum of 30 hours a week and a maximum of 40 hours a week.
  3. To get the total number of hours worked by all employees, add the hours worked by full-time and part-time employees.
  4. To calculate a full-time equivalent for a specified period of time, divide the total number of hours of full-time employees and part-time employees (410 hours in our example) by the regular number of full-time hours (2,080 hours per year, 40 hours x 52 weeks in our example).

How do you calculate the percentage of full-time equivalents?

An employee who works full-time or equivalent to a full-time employee is designated as an FTE 100%. Full-time status is generally defined as 40 hours per week, but some companies also use other time amounts. As a result, this can also be referred to as 1.0 FTE.
