Below is a list of 6 important skills you as a future or existing security guard should have:

  1.  Alertness: A security officer should always be alert and focused. They should know their surroundings and notice changes. At the same time as a security guard you  must be able to avoid as many distractions as possible. All attention should be on what is important to ensure lives are not in jeopardy. They need to able to act fast and therefor have quick reflexes. It's more then only noticing but as a security guar you need to act pro-active, being able to quickly analyze the situation react and figure out how to address it.
  2. Trustworthy: A security guard is responsible for securing the access to locations and protecting people and businesses from crime, so they have to be honest. Your client needs to be able to look at you and think “Yes, I’m safe with this person. I trust this person with my life. A quality candidate will present himself or herself well and be able to provide this trust.
  3. Physical fitness: You need to have healthy weight range and exercise regularly to stay fit. An unfit security guard might not be able to protect as well as a fit one and being in good shape will lead to better mental alertness.  Not only do they need to be physically fit, but they need to look reputable, too. Ensure you have a clean, neat uniform. You should look good in the eyes of your client and the public they serve.
  4. Communication skills: As a security guard you should be able to communicate effectively. Clear communication is often a deciding factor in handling a emergency, so ensure your as a guard knows how to use the right words and keep sentences straight forward. Good written communication skills will help you to document each important incident that happened.
  5. Follow instructions and ability to serve client’s needs: Be detail oriented because you will perform several tasks and will need to remember a lot of information. Each security guard is given a post/role, and to this post/role they a list of instructions is included. It’s important that you are able to follow directions. You need to  understand security operations, so they you can meet client’s needs. Also always stay professional.
  6. Be a leader and a team player: Security guards often work alone. Still you need strong leadership skills. Depending on the size of the operation, the person or business that needs to be protected, security guards also work in a groups to ensure the perimeter is completely secure. You should be able to recognize the difference between when it’s time to take control, and when it’s time to stand down and take orders.
