A Personal Recommendation letter or reference letter, is often sent from the current supervisor, professor, coworker, peer, or personal contact who can describe the knowledge, skills, or aptitudes that you possess. When looking for employment, a current or previous employer or direct supervisor is the best reference. When a person asks you to write a kind recommendation, what do you do? You might ask yourself the following:

How do I write a personal recommendation letter?

Recommendation letters can be used when looking for work or applying to graduate school. Reference letters may be required when applying for monetary awards, such as a fellowship or grant. When presented selectively in a portfolio, reference letters provide compelling evidence to an employer or committee about your abilities. While your referees can provide a verbal reference, letters can be used if your reference has moved away, is no longer with the organization, or is out of reach for some reason, such as on holiday, when you need to supply your references. It is also acceptable to include a direct supervisor from unpaid employment, such as a practicum or a volunteer position. When applying for graduate or professional school, persons who can comment on your academic achievements, such as a professor, or a professional who is active in the field you wish to enter, are excellent choices. Personal and/or professional acquaintances, for example, a high-ranking community member or professional in good standing whom you know personally, are also acceptable.

Sample letter of recommendation for a friend and colleague:

To Whom This May Concern,

It is my pleasure to write this recommendation letter on behalf of my colleague {{Name}}. {{Name}} and I have worked in the same hospital for four years. We were both assigned in the {{intensive care unit}} where I was able to become a witness to her reliable and noteworthy skills in the field of nursing. {{Name}} was successful and dutiful in carrying out all the necessary tasks in the unit, dealing with a great number of clients with different cases daily. {{Name}} possesses the admirable ability to work well under pressure and to see the best in people at the worst of times. Through her patience, perseverance, and skills in dealing with children, she was able to lend her therapeutic hand to the sick children, assisting in their fast recovery and transition from the emergency state to a stable status. She has saved many lives through her dedication to her career. As {{Name}}’s co-worker in the area, I can firmly say that your institution will benefit greatly from her broad range of nursing skills and attitude. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should require any further information. If you require more information, please feel free to call me at {{Phone}} or email: {{email}}.
