Presidents Day found its origin in 1880 when the birthday of George Washington, who was back then the Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and also America's first president, was celebrated as a federal holiday. The celebration of Washington's birthday was first established in the year 1885, honoring his birthday on the 22nd of February.
