A motivation letter is a document next to you in which, in addition to your suitability, you also indicate the reasons why you would like to have the job. The employer determines who to invite based on the CVs and letters they receive. A motivation letter specifically describes why you would be a suitable match for the job or internship that is open. You are not supposed to repeat your resume in your letter. Instead, it's wise to introduce yourself as a person. Tell a personal story about who you are, what you can do and why you are suitable for the position.

How do you write a College motivation letter?

A strong motivation letter therefore focuses on answering a number of 'why' questions.

Write in your motivation letter:

  • Why you want to work for the organization?
  • Why the position appeals to you?
  • Why you're right for the job?

Answering these questions clearly also gives you more space to show your personality.

What are the most important things that a good motivation must meet?

Writing suggestions:

  • Tip 1. Introduce yourself: Briefly tell who you are. Sketch a picture of yourself based on your work experience and education. And limit this section to 1 or 2 sentences.
  • Tip 2. Tell what you have achieved: Show them clearly enough how the company can benefit from your background and skills, and they won't need much time to decide they should hire you. Often the mistake is made to list responsibilities.
  • Tip 3. Tell a personal story: People love to read a story. Even better: A personal story. Do you and the organization both have a passion for sustainability? Have you graduated on the subject that needs to be researched in your future position? Make sure you make a link between the activities of the position, the organization and yourself.
  • Tip 4. Write convincingly and with enthusiasm: You will need to deliver your entire letter in a persuasive and energetic manner. We have already seen a smart way: convince with practical examples and hard figures. In addition, it works very well to tell your story full of energy and enthusiasm.
  • Tip 5: Tell who you already know: Have you been referred by the Head of Communications? Tell it! Do you know the product manager of department Y, tell us! Your network opens most doors and it certainly doesn't hurt to 'drop a name' in your letter.

Sample College motivation letter example:

I am writing to apply for the position of Position in Department beginning Month/Year, as advertised on the University name website.  I am currently a doctoral candidate at the School name and fully expect to complete my Ph.D. degree requirements by Month/Year.  I am extremely interested in obtaining a faculty position at the University name, as its engineering research programs have a stellar reputation that is known worldwide.
I believe that my academic training and my Period of experience working as a Job title prepare me to be an effective researcher and instructor in your department.  My doctoral dissertation was conducted under the direction of {{Name}}, and looks at the use of a relatively new methodology for the design of joints, walls, footings, and other portions of reinforced or pre-stressed concrete structures.  In my research, I developed an integrated design and analysis environment for this methodology in which both strength and serviceability requirements are explicitly satisfied.  This was delivered in a computer-based program that is freely available to the community and has been downloaded by more than 2500 people.
