Presidents Day found its origin in 1880 when the birthday of George Washington, who was back then the Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and also America's first president, was celebrated as a federal holiday. The celebration of Washington's birthday was first established in the year 1885, honoring his birthday on the 22nd of February.

President George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the Julian calendar. In 1752 however. Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which moved Washington's birthday a year and 11 days to February 22, 1732.
