Veterans Day, that was originally named 'Armistice Day', is an American federal holiday that takes place annually on November 11, with exceptions if that day falls in the weekend, and is celebrated to honor military veterans of the US Army who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

When is Veterans' day?

Veteran's day 2022: Friday November 11th, 2022
Veteran's day 2023: Friday November 10th, 2023 (public holiday on November 10th)
Veteran's day 2024: Monday November 11th, 2024
Veteran's day 2025: Tuesday November 11th, 2025
Veteran's day 2026: Wednesday November 11th, 2026
Veteran's day 2027: Thursday November 11th, 2027
Veteran's day 2028: Saturday November 11th, 2028 (public holiday on November 10th)
Veteran's day 2029: Sunday November 11th, 2029 (public holiday on November 12th)
Veteran's day 2030: Monday November 11th, 2030

While the first World war (WWI) back than was also called "the war to end all wars,", years after WWII started. Since WWI was not the last war, by the early 1950s, millions of Americans had served in WWII while fighting in the Korean War. Therefore the name Veterans Day was created, which replaced the previous Armistice Day from June 1, 1954. This way, also the younger generations of veterans were honored. It also coincides with other holidays like Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Since major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect, for that reason it is still celebrated on November 11th. In case the day falls in the weekend, a weekday is selected to celebrate the public holiday.

Difference with Memorial Day:

People, especially non-Americans, often confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. However, they are 2 distinct national holidays. Memorial Day is celebrated in May and honors those who had died while serving the US Army.
