Envelope is a flat piece of material with either sealed or unsealed ends that are used when posting mails. It is a flat, flexible container made of paper or similar material that has an opening and a flap that can be sealed over the opening. Envelopes are usually sealed by wetting one area of the flap. Some envelopes are sealed with metal buttons. Others are sealed with a string that wraps around the flat circular cardboard on the envelope.

What is an envelope?

Envelopes are divided into two types based on how they are opened: open end or open side. By placing a flap on the short end of the envelope, open envelopes are identified. Here are some facts about the contents of an open envelope that you probably didn't know. The most recent advancement in envelopes is a thin strip of plastic that is removed to reveal the flap area with non-wet adhesive.

The flap is the folded, overlapped, and sealed portion of the envelope that encloses the contents. They are typically rectangular or triangular in shape, with rounded, beveled, or sharp corners. A standard envelope has two side flaps, a bottom flap, and a top flap. Fold the side flaps and the bottom flap up first. They are sealed together where they overlap. After filling the envelope, fold the top flap over the side and bottom flaps and seal. For mailing magazines, binders, reports, catalogs, and other heavy-duty materials, open envelopes and catalog envelopes with purse-style flaps and center seams are commonly used. Insurance policy envelopes, wills, mortgages, and other legal documents may have a full-view window on the front.

How to address an envelope?

  • Write the return (sender) full name and address at the top left hand corner.
  • Write the recipient's full name and address slightly centered on the bottom half of the envelope.
  • To post, place stamp in the top right hand corner.
