Overview
Rejecting a job offer can be done for many reasons. The pay may not be enough or it's less than what you were previously earning. You may not like the company or don't really like the people who you would be working for. These are valid reasons to decline a job offer. You are always entitled to that, but make sure the letter is kind and appreciative.
How to write an email rejecting a job offer?
Before sending a declination of the offer letter, make sure you are positive you do not want the job. If a scenario exists wherein you might take the job (such as a pay increase or other changes in the benefits package), first try to negotiate a counter offer. When writing a declination of offer letter, express your interest in working for the employer in the future. Indicate that you would like to be considered for future job openings in the company. Be sure to use clear language in this section so that the employer can contact you about the job at a later date.
Turning down a job offer can be a challenge, so politely turning down a job offer is an art you have to master. After all, no candidate wants to break the bridge to a potential employer. We can never know when the paths will cross again. Just because an offer has been made to you is not a sufficient reason to accept it. You may have gotten a better offer, the salary doesn't meet industry standards, or you just have a gut feeling that you should skip the offer - there could be multiple reasons for declining an offer. Whatever the reason, knowing how to respectfully decline a job offer takes practice.
When writing a letter rejecting a job offer, your email should include the following:
- Expression of appreciation for the offer;
- Written rejection of the offer.
Reasons for rejection job offer, for example, due to:
- Personal reasons;
- Salary too low;
- To long commute;
- Illness;
- A better offer.
Address the letter to the person who offered you the position. Include your contact information and phone number, even though it is on file with the employer. There's no need to give extensive details as to why you're declining the job. Do not include any potentially offensive reasons, such as a poor work environment or feeling uncertain about the company's long-term future and profitability. However, it is appropriate to briefly mention a reason for turning the job down. For example, you might explain that you accepted another offer, decided it was best to stay at your current job, or felt that the position didn’t ultimately match your career goals. Whatever the case, keep your explanation brief.
