Body fat percentages is the percentage of your body that consist of fat. Everyone has a different body fat distribution in their body according to WHO. Measuring body fat is key to assessing whether a person is overweight, obese or at a healthy weight.

What are some methods to measure the body fat percentages?

There are two types of fat in your body. Non-fat mass which is also known as essential fat. This kind of fat is in your bones, liver, kidneys, intestines, and muscles. Fat in these places is required for your body to function normally. The other is Fat mass which is also known as stored fat, this is found in your adipose tissue. This type of fat is used as energy for your body. It insulates and cushions your body. It surrounds your organs and is just under your skin. The body needs a desired level of fats to live and survive, but an excessive amount of fat can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart-related diseases. The amount of essential fat is different for men and women, it is usually 10 to 13% in women and 2 to 5% in men. However, the normal range of body fat percentage for women is 21 to 33% and for men is 8 to 19% typically. Your body is made up of water, protein, fat, and minerals. The body fat percentage can be measured by calculating the circumference of various parts of the body. A tape can be used to measure it. For a more accurate calculation of body fat percentage, it is preferred to the measurement of the circumference of the waist and neck. For females, the circumference of the hips should also be measured.

  • Hydrostatic weighing;
  • BIS (Bioelectrical impedance analysis);
  • Bioimpedance spectroscopy;
  • DXA (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry);
