Overview

Envelope is a flat piece of material with either sealed or unsealed ends that are used when posting mails. It is a flat, flexible container made of paper or similar material that has an opening and a flap that can be sealed over the opening. Envelopes are usually sealed by wetting one area of the flap. Some envelopes are sealed with metal buttons. Others are sealed with a string that wraps around the flat circular cardboard on the envelope.

What is an envelope?

Envelopes are classified by how they are opened - open end or open side. Open envelopes are identified by placing a flap on the short end of the envelope. Here are some things you probably didn't know about the contents of an open envelope. The latest development in envelopes is a thin strip of plastic that is removed to reveal the flap area with adhesive that doesn't need to be wetted.

Flap is the portion of the envelope that is folded, overlapped and sealed to enclose the contents. They are usually rectangles or triangles with rounded, beveled, or sharp corners. A typical envelope consists of two side flaps, a bottom flap and a top flap. First, fold the side flaps up and the bottom flap up. They are sealed where they overlap. After loading the envelope contents, the top flap is folded over the side and bottom flaps and sealed. Typically, open envelopes and catalog envelopes with purse-style flaps and center seams are used for mailing magazines, binders, reports, catalogs, and other heavy-duty materials. Policy envelopes for insurance policies, wills, mortgages, and other legal documents sometimes have a full-view window on the front.
